[books] "another discouraging document of this age of wild talk"

Checkpoint by Nicholson Baker has sold fewer than 6,500 copies in two weeks. I knew it wasn't going to do well. No one wants to read about assassinating the president while the president is still in office. I think Bush is a schmuck but wait until he's out of office first.

Only a couple more months to go...

Hey, gone on vaca for a week, but now I'm back! Commence celebrating. I've started on Kevin Phillips' American Dynasty: yada yada long subtitle. It's very good, and well researched so far. Pretty bad when a dyed in the wool Republican starts irrefutably smacking around a fanatic of privilege. Man some unbelievable shit in there. You know, for all the talk I've heard people do about us being in a new Gilded Age, it makes sense. All these assholes' money comes from their crooked deals in the first one. The connections even within their own family are staggering, I hope people like their royalty (we left "aristocracy" in '68) corrupt and entrenched, b/c I think we'll be stuck with them for a long while.
