Dollar didn't go to India. He had a very real, very terrifying panic attack at the airport. He's back home. Murderface is happy he's home, he's relieved to be home, I am relieved he's okay. It was a stressful night. Now to find out what the fallout from his work is going to be...
UPDATE: Minimal to zero fallout. People have been really understanding. The ticket was able to be refunded in full. Dollar's getting back to normal and I'm trying to lift his spirits.

Dollar's leaving tonight for a 16-day work trip to India. I haz a big fat sad.
Things might be quiet around here for a while. And no pictures. I lent him my camera with instructions to take pictures of everything- "Your bed... What you eat... The sidewalk..."
Poor Murderface is going to get attention-smothered.

[hiking] Crossingham Road Farm Trails
Saturday was another good day for a hike. I went to Crossingham Road Farm Trails in Norwich, VT. It's > 4 miles of trails used by cross-country skiers a lot in the winter. The trails are wide and winding:

I've noticed that as I go stomping through the woods like a Clydesdale, the trails feel hollow underfoot. That's the frost heaves still present. I happened to catch a nice cross section. Here you can see some of the ice, just below center:

I got down for a better look:

Cool. It was melting fast in the warm sunshine.
This was a nice trail. It's well posted and there are lots of different trails and shortcuts to take.

On the way back to the car, walking on a class 4 road, I stepped unto some mud sucking quicksand and nearly lost my left shoe. Some parts of the trail were really muddy. Well, I didn't know that you shouldn't hike during mud season. Oops. I've been staying around the Upper Valley (lower elevations) and the trails I've been on have only had patches of mud here and there.

[misc] Murderface Monday

Murderface likes to roll around in the dirt. He doesn't do it when I'm looking.
This is actually our lawn he's on. The guy that would come and plow our driveway this past winter successfully moved all kinds of gravel and bits of lawn to places they shouldn't be.
Wednesday
[hiking] Hurricane Forest Wildlife Refuge
After a rainy weekend, the weather returned to 'unseasonably gorgeous' yesterday. I went for a hike up around the Hurricane Forest Wildlife Refuge (which I think most people just call Hurricane Hill, right?).

The trail got pretty muddy at a few parts and I stepped through thin ice a couple times. I ended up with soggy socks. Oh well, it was totally worth it to be hiking around in a t-shirt in the middle of March!
There isn't a summit, per se. The trail goes up a hill, levels out, then heads back down. No views at the top, other than trees around you.
Coming back down, I thought this was the coolest tree:

It had fallen over at some point... but then kept growing. You go, tree!

It was a good little hike. I like that it's less than two miles from my house.

Dollar and I are heading up to Higher Ground tonight to see Soulfly. It's a metal band, but with Brazilian tribal influences. I'm interested to see what it's like. I'm trying to remain positive. It's not really my style of music but Dollar loooooooves this band. And I can usually get into any live music.
Thursday
[hiking] Boston Lot Lake
Tuesday I went hiking up around Boston Lot Lake in West Lebanon, NH. I hadn't been up there in years and it's kind of a trip to hike from the Connecticut River/Wilder Dam UP to a lake at a higher elevation.

Look at that sky...

There were LOTS of trees down from the omgwtf-surprise-hurricane winds we had a couple weeks ago. Huge trees pushed over (roots and all) or completely snapped. There will be a lot of cleanup for the trails crew to take care of it all.
This is a well-marked trail with pretty views.

Tuesday
[hiking] Faulkner Trail
Sunday was so nice, I had to get out of the house. I drove over to Woodstock, VT and went up the Faulkner Trail. It's an easy hike (low-grade switchbacks) but the still snowy/slushy path added some extra resistance. I have some black & white photos:

And color pictures because the sky is blue! And there were no clouds! And it was so warm!!

Can't wait to get more hiking in!

[misc] Murderface Monday
Sunshine came softly through my a-window today...

Could've tripped out easy a-but I've a-changed my ways...

Murderface, scratching my shoe. His favorite thing to scratch.

He's never touched the scratching post, the white thing RIGHT THERE. He prefers shoes.
He's getting his last shot that the vet today. I'm glad, because I need to talk to the vet about some brown gunk coming out of his left eye.

[knitting] Herringbone Mittens
I did get knitting-olympic gold for these mittens:

Pattern: Herringbone Mittens (sans poms)
Needles: US 5 (3.75mm) for cuff, US 7 (4.5 mm) for hand and thumb.
Yarn: Green Mountain Spinnery Mountain Mohair: 1 skein natural, 1 skein evergreen
Gold for completing the mittens, that they are colorwork and for using stash yarn...

I know, the original pattern I wanted to do was Wintergreen. I got nearly halfway up one mitten and had hated every minute of knitting it. Every. Minute. I knew if I finished it, I wasn't going to want to make another one. So I frogged. I'd still like to try the pattern, but with a bouncy sport-weight yarn and, like, US 7 needles.
I still wanted to make stranded mittens with the Mountain Mohair, so I grabbed the Herringbone pattern. These mittens were so much easier and faster to work on. I acutally enjoyed working on them- imagine that! My only complaint is that I think the thumbs came out too short. If I were to make them again (and I think I probably will), I'd make the thumbs three for four rows longer. I was able to block them out to be longer but unblocked, the would only have fit of you snipped off my thumbs at the first knuckle. Really.
No gold for the cabled bag. The body is done but I'm still making the i-cord and I have a zipper and fabric I'd like to sew in as a lining. But since I have no idea how to do that, the project is in cryogenic stasis. And I didn't even get to Murderface's new sweater. He's devastated- I know it.

Tuesday
[knitting] Back to the grind
The knitting olympics are over and I was able to make one project. More on that tomorrow.
I've gone back to working on a shawl made of fan motifs:

I haven't worked on this thing since early January. It's suuuuuuch a pain in the ass. It's pretty and soft and I'm even using my own handspun:

But this is lace-weight and I really don't like working with anything finer than fingering-weight. The yarn just feels too thin and delicate in my hands. But I'm forcing myself to do at least one fan per day. Which means I would finish this before the end of the month. Pleeeeeeease let me finish before the end of the month.

[misc] Murderface Monday
I recently went to TJ Maxx on a scavenger hunt for new bed linens. The housewares section can be a bit of a junkpile and I find I need to be in the right mood for two hours of digging through things to find the ones I want. A 100% cotton extra-deep fitted sheet for $17. A pair of 100% cotton pillow cases for $6. Etc. I also picked up a duvet cover that Murderface appears to like:

I get kind of jealous when I see him looking this comfortable.
